Understanding South Korea's High-Speed Rail Network: KTX vs. SRT vs. ITX

South Korea's national railway operator KORAIL runs the KTX (Korea Train eXpress) network at speeds up to 305 km/h, supplemented by the newer 320 km/h KTX-Cheongryong and tilting KTX-Eum trains on eastern and central mountain corridors. A separate high-speed operator, SR (Super Rapid Train / SRT), runs from Suseo Station in southeastern Seoul (Gangnam/Songpa) down the exact same high-speed lines to Gyeongju, Busan, and Gwangju-Songjeong at fares roughly 10% lower than KTX.

Does the KORAIL Pass Pay Off? Exact Break-Even Math

The KORAIL Pass is a foreign-tourist-only rail pass available in Consecutive (2, 3, 4, or 5 consecutive days) or Select / Flexible (2 or 4 travel days within a 10-day period) versions. Currently, the 2-Day Select Pass costs roughly ₩128,000 and the 4-Day Select Pass costs ₩244,000 for adults (Youth/Child and 2–5 person Saver Group passes cost ₩10,000–₩15,000 less per person).

  • Example A — Classic Seoul → Gyeongju → Busan → Seoul: Point-to-point tickets cost ₩49,300 + ₩11,000 + ₩59,800 = ₩120,100. Buying three individual tickets on letskorail.com is ₩7,900–₩20,000 cheaper than a KORAIL Pass!
  • Example B — Multi-City Loop (Seoul → Gangneung, Seoul → Jeonju → Busan → Seoul): Point-to-point tickets exceed ₩175,000–₩260,000, making a 4-Day Select Pass or Saver Group Pass a genuine money-saver, especially if you take day trips.

How to Book Seats, Board, and Store Luggage on KTX

  1. Book 30 Days Ahead: Reservations open 30 days prior to departure at 07:00 KST on letskorail.com (no account needed; accepts foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and Amex). Do not rely on third-party resellers that tack on $8–$15 service fees per ticket unless the official site rejects your card's 3D-Secure verification.
  2. Check Which Seoul Terminal You Need: Seoul Station handles Gyeongbu Line KTXs (Daejeon, Daegu, Gyeongju, Ulsan, Busan) and selected Gangneung/Jeolla trains. Yongsan Station (two stops south on Line 1) is the primary hub for Honam/Jeolla KTXs (Gwangju, Mokpo, Jeonju, Suncheon, Yeosu). Cheongnyangni Station is the primary hub for Jungang Line KTX-Eum trains to Wonju, Jecheon, and Andong. Suseo Station (Line 3 / Bundang Line in Gangnam) is the exclusive terminal for SRT trains.
  3. No Ticket Gates: Check the overhead departure LED boards in the main concourse 15 minutes before departure, walk down to the listed track, and board your car number (printed on platform floor markers). Keep your digital QR ticket or printout handy, though conductors only interrupt passengers sitting in unassigned seats.
  4. Luggage Racks: Every KTX car has overhead racks that fit 20–24 inch carry-on and medium suitcases (up to 28 cm deep), plus dedicated floor luggage racks in the vestibule between cars for 28-inch checked suitcases. No oversized-baggage reservation is required on KTX or SRT.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reserve oversized luggage space on the KTX in advance?

No. South Korea's KTX and SRT high-speed trains do not require advance reservations for large suitcases. Every car has vestibule luggage racks at the ends of the coach plus overhead shelves.

Can I use my T-money card to ride the KTX?

No. You cannot tap a T-money card to board a KTX, SRT, ITX-Saemaeul, or Mugunghwa intercity train. You must purchase a reserved seat or standing ticket in advance online, on the KorailTalk app, or at a station ticket machine.

What should I do if KTX tickets from Seoul to Busan are sold out?

First, check SRT trains departing from Suseo Station (in southern Seoul) on etk.srail.kr. Second, check Express Buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gyeongbu Line), which depart every 15–20 minutes in plush 21-seat Premium or 28-seat 우등 (Udeung) recliner coaches. Third, visit a station ticket counter on the day of travel to buy a KTX standing ticket (Ip-seok) or split-seat ticket.
