Overview
Encircled by the forested ridges of Palgongsan to the north and Biseulsan to the south, Daegu is South Korea's fourth-largest metropolitan city (population 2.4 million) and the historic commercial heart of the Yeongnam region. While neighboring Gyeongju preserves ancient Silla royalty, Daegu shines with 365-year-old Yangnyeongsi oriental herbal medicine markets, early-20th-century red-brick missionary hills, and Korea's liveliest open-air night food market at Seomun.
Known nationwide as the birthplace of modern Korean fried chicken brands and home to Kim Gwang-seok Redrawing Street, E-World 83 Tower, and the serene mountain halls of Donghwasa Temple, Daegu is a rewarding stop right on the main KTX line between Seoul and Busan.

Late March to April illuminates E-World 83 Tower, Suseong Lake, and Palgongsan cherry blossom tunnels; July hosts the massive 5-day Daegu Chimac (Chicken & Beer) Festival at Duryu Park (note: Daegu's basin geography makes midsummer afternoons hot—nicknamed 'Daefrica' by locals—so plan evening market visits); late October–November turns Palgongsan Cable Car and Donghwasa into a tapestry of autumn maples.
