Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Central Seoul: Comparing 4 Options

Incheon International Airport sits 50 km west of central Seoul on Yeongjong Island and operates two passenger terminals (Terminal 1 for Asiana, low-cost carriers, Star Alliance, and oneworld; Terminal 2 for Korean Air, Delta, Air France, KLM, and SkyTeam). Choose your transfer based on your Seoul hotel neighborhood and luggage weight:

Seoul Station City Airport Terminal: Check Bags & Clear Immigration Downtown

One of Seoul's best travel hacks is the City Airport Terminal on Level B2 of Seoul Station. If you hold a same-day boarding pass on AREX Express and are flying out of Incheon Airport on a participating airline (including Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, T'way Air, Air Seoul, Air Busan, Jin Air, and Lufthansa), you can:

  1. Buy an AREX Express ticket at B2 Seoul Station.
  2. Check your hold suitcases at the airline counter at least 3 hours before a Terminal 1 flight or 3 hours 20 minutes before a Terminal 2 flight (check-in opens at 05:20 AM; bags go straight to your final destination).
  3. Walk next door to the Ministry of Justice immigration counter inside Seoul Station to get your passport stamped in 60 seconds.
  4. Spend your final afternoon in Seoul completely luggage-free, ride the AREX Express to ICN, and enter the airport through the dedicated Diplomatic / Crew / City Airport Terminal fast-track security side doors, bypassing the main check-in and immigration lines entirely.

Gimpo Airport (GMP) & Transferring Between Gimpo and Incheon

Gimpo International Airport (GMP) sits just 15 km west of downtown Seoul and handles virtually all domestic flights to Jeju Island, Busan, and Ulsan, plus short-haul shuttle flights to Tokyo Haneda, Osaka Kansai, Taipei Songshan, and Shanghai Hongqiao. From Gimpo, the AREX All-Stop Train reaches Hongik Univ. Station (Hongdae) in 14 minutes (₩1,500) and Seoul Station in 22 minutes (₩1,600), while Subway Line 9 Express reaches Sinnonhyeon/Gangnam in 30 minutes. If you are connecting from a Jeju domestic flight at Gimpo to an international departure at Incheon, ride the direct AREX All-Stop train westbound from Gimpo to Incheon T1 (38 minutes) or T2 (44 minutes)—allow a minimum 3 to 3.5-hour buffer between scheduled domestic touchdown and international departure.

Busan Gimhae International Airport (PUS) to Haeundae, Seomyeon & Nampo

At Busan's Gimhae Airport (PUS), walk 3 minutes outside the terminal to the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit (LRT) station. Tap your T-money card (₩1,900–₩2,100) and ride 3 stops (7 minutes) to Sasang Station to transfer onto Busan Metro Line 2 for Seomyeon (25 min total), Gwangalli (45 min), or Haeundae Beach (55 min), OR ride 6 stops to Daejeo Station to transfer onto Metro Line 3. Taxis from Gimhae Airport cost roughly ₩20,000–₩25,000 to Seomyeon/Nampo-dong and ₩32,000–₩38,000 to Haeundae Beach.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take the AREX Express or AREX All-Stop train if my hotel is in Hongdae?

Take the AREX All-Stop Train! The Express Train does not stop at Hongik Univ. Station (it runs non-stop to Seoul Station, forcing you to backtrack). The All-Stop train takes you directly to Hongik Univ. Station in 52 minutes for just ₩4,450 with T-money.

What if my flight lands at Incheon Airport after midnight when trains have stopped?

Late-night Airport Buses (N6000 to Gangnam Express Bus Terminal, N6001 to Seoul Station, N6002 to Hongdae/Seoul Station/Cheongnyangni, and N6701 to City Hall/Myeongdong/Dongdaemun) run throughout the night between 23:50 and 04:30 for ₩17,000, or you can take a metered taxi from the official arrivals stand (20–40% late-night surcharge applies between 22:00 and 04:00).

Do Airport Limousine Buses accept T-money or foreign credit cards?

From Incheon Airport heading into Seoul, you must buy a numbered seat ticket at the indoor/outdoor bus ticket booths or red touchscreen kiosks using a foreign credit card or cash (so they don't oversell seats). On the return trip from Seoul city stops back to Incheon Airport, you can tap your T-money card directly on the bus reader.
