Overview

Just 30 minutes south of Seoul, Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province (population 1.2 million) and home to UNESCO-listed Hwaseong Fortress—the pinnacle of 18th-century Korean military architecture. Built between 1794 and 1796 by Reformist King Jeongjo to honor his father Crown Prince Sado, the 5.74-kilometer stone-and-brick rampart still completely encircles historic central Suwon with four monumental gates, floodgates, watchtowers, and beacon towers.

Right inside the fortress walls, Haenggung-dong ('Haengnidan-gil') has blossomed into one of Korea's coolest low-rise creative neighborhoods, filled with independent roasteries, rooftop cafes looking out over the fortress battlements, K-drama filming alleys, and Suwon's legendary Wang-galbi (marinated king beef short rib) restaurants.
